After settling his father in at the dementia unit, and making sure his mother had calmed down enough to drive home, Paul went to his office

He slumped in his chair, flipping a pen back and forth between his fingers. He replayed the scene in his head, but he still couldn’t believe it. That wheelchair had rolled up a slight incline. There was no way gravity caused it. No one had been around to give him a push, and furthermore, the wheelchair picked up speed at the end, even on the upward slope.

What had stopped it? One of the security guards suggested a rock had diverted its path. But Paul had looked at the ground and found nothing on the pavement. When the chair stopped, the closest people to it were Maeve’s aunts, at least twenty feet away. Their eyes had been like hawks’ on his father’s chair, and their lips had moved in unison as they held hands. What the hell was going on around here? He threw the pen on the desk. It clattered across the top and then fell to the floor.

Anne came around the partition and gave him an appraising stare. “What’s up, boss?”

“Nothing, sorry, just frustrated. Nothing makes sense with this Baker case.”

She held two manila folders. “Speaking of which, Mrs. Baker came by this morning. She said Nellie Dunbar called her and told her it was okay to give you the files on her case.”

He eyed the folders with misgiving, but finally took them from her hands. Did he really want to get involved in investigating a centuries old murder?

“Is George okay after the accident?” Anne asked.

News sure traveled fast in small town America. “Yes, his wheelchair got away and rolled into the parking lot, but he wasn’t hurt.”

“I’m glad. I really miss him,” she said wistfully, then turned and walked back to her desk.

Paul picked up one of the files and flipped through the pages. He had to pursue the case, not only for Mr. Baker and Nellie Dunbar. He was now convinced this mystery included his father.

He let out a deep breath, leaned back and propped his feet on the desk. Might as well get to it. He started reading where Mr. Baker first met with Nellie Dunbar. The lawyer had made notes on her claims and he’d scrawled some ideas for gathering further evidence. One of the entries caught his eye and he sat up. Well, well, maybe there was a case here after all.
